Most Singaporeans who travel to Perth eventually head to its most famous region - the Margaret River. However, most people don't know that the famed "Margaret River" destination is not actually a luscious region along the banks of a river. Margaret River is instead a town located in a valley which constitutes the actual river. And the Margaret River region, famous for its rich food and delicious wines, constitutes an area much larger than the town itself. In fact quite a number of the famous Margaret River vineyards are located rather far from the town!
Given how famous the region is, we were excited to be spending two entire days there. This first blog post will provide an account of the speciality food locations we visited while in the region. The other two posts will provide more details on the beautiful natural sights and of course the vineyards.
Our first stop was the famous Providore, rated among the country's top gourmet experiences. Nestled in a lovely vineyard setting, the food speciality store serves up tasting portions of its fresh produce, and even boasts a cellar door featuring its Sambarino chocolate liqueur.
Given how famous Providore is, it was exciting just to be have a first-hand gourmet experience. |
Much of the produce is gathered from the mineral rich areas around it. |
Providore is a food taster's dream come true. With chutneys, marmalades, oils and sauces
of every type, it was truly a culinary delight! |
Our 2yo had a most fruitful tasting experience, helping himself to the tasting spoons
and pointing out which one he liked. For the record, his favourite selection
was the Onion and Thyme Marmalade. |
Next up - Olio Bello. We first learnt of this lovely olive oil when we visited the home of our good friend Daniel and his family. Daniel's wife Bernice whipped up a most delicious pasta meal using only fresh ingredients and a special blend of Olio Bello olive oil. We were hooked from that moment onwards and made it a point to visit this lovely location during our visit to the Margaret River region.
Olio Bello's retail store is located in a lovely region. It apparently serves meals and wines,
naturally paired with the most delicious olive oils. |
We enjoyed the range of olive oils; especially the Mandarin Pressed and Five Fruits Pressed flavours. |
Come with a discerning palate and a hearty appetite to sample the various olive oils and chutneys! |
And bargain hunters can get last season's oils at good prices. |
After enjoying the lovely products of the region, it was off to explore the scenic sights of the region - specifically the dazzling Jewel Cave and the gorgeous Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse (which I will write about in the next blog).
But the day was not yet done. En route back to our accommodation in Busselton, we decided to stop in the Margaret River town itself to have dinner. Our venue, the humble Goodfellas Cafe, was on hindsight a fantastic option. They served us the most delicious pizzas from their wood-fired oven. And if you add in a decadent pasta special and a cold regional beer, that just about completes a day in the famed Margaret River district!
Located at the second floor of a building, one would hardly notice this obscure but yet extremely cosy place! |
The wood-fired ovens look decadent! |
Imagine your pizzas coming out fresh from the oven! |
Fresh seafood pizza. Served best with a locally brewed Aussie beer! |
One of the best pastas we have ever eaten! |
What's in the pasta? |
Our little 4yo son enjoying the meal. |
One big happy family! |
